Episode 34 Disney Honorable Mentions: The Sword in the Stone & Robin Hood

Hi everyone! For another round of Honorable Mentions, we're going to be looking at Sword in the Stone (1963) and Robin Hood (1973), with a special guest, Mike Knoll, who was kind enough to bring a bunch of tomatoes! He'll join us to talk about the uses of enchantment, education, and sexy animals, as well as the re-uses of story structure, animation, and mythology.

Because there's three of us, this episode is half-again as long, but we guarantee you, it's worth it.

Way back when we were first making our bracket, we were SHOCKED that Princess and the Frog's adjusted gross was lower than some of the contenders, so we decided to give it an episode of its own. Did it hold up as well as we remember? We'll try to figure out why it didn't do better, as well as look at its place in history, both in its portrayal of race and its use of animation. Episode 31 Disney Bracket Finals: Moana vs Tangled

It's the Season Finale! And with this, our Disney Bracket is complete, so if you have friends who like marathonning a show, tell them about us because we're all done!

It's been a long road getting here, but before we're done, we'll have to compare Moana (2016) and Tangled (2010). Along the way we'll talk about the uses of antagonists, justice and the ethics of fixing men, and magical autonomy. Don't worry, it's not all serious, we'll be horsin' around a bit too.

Round 2 of the Semifinals! Penultimate Episode! History of Lilo and Stitch (2002) and Tangled (2010)! We''ll also get into Hair Technology, Disney's use of diegesis and cultural reference to expand on the story, the ethics of taking a princess to a kink club, and unhelpful white people.

As we begin the semifinals we're diving into Moana(2016) and Beauty & the Beast(1991). We talk about their production histories, the complexity of their characters, use of music to complement narrative and theme, and somehow sex workers and abstinence-only sex-ed. Episode 28 Disney Bracket: Lion King vs Tangled

We're finishing off our Quarter Finals by pitting The Lion King (1994) against Tangled (2010). We'll be taking a surprisingly long detour into In The Heat of the Night, having some unsettling realizations about Timon and Pumba, talking about the use of color and body language to tell stories, and throwing out a few fanfic-y suggestions for the "Live Action" Lion King (2019).

Episode 27 Disney Bracket: 101 Dalmatians vs Lilo & Stitch

As we progress rapidly through Round Three, we'll be pitting 101 Dalmatians (1961) against Lilo and Stitch (2002). Join us, won't you, as we dive into the way the two films handle communalism vs. self-interest and how it interacts with class politics, the strengths and subtleties of the flims' art styles and troubles with their pacing, and Jackson continues to test the limits of the furry threshold.

Help, it's Match Two of the Quarter Finals, with iconic darling Beauty and the Beast (1991) up against dark horse contender Dinosaur (2000)! We're gonna talk about pacing and structure, decide definitively which film has the better Ambiguously Gay Duo, and struggle with the urge to devolve into complaining about the Live Action Adaptions.

Episode 25 Disney Bracket: Moana vs Hunchback of Notre Dame

Wow, we're up to round three, the Quarterfinals! This week, we're comparing Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) with Moana (2016), the latter of which is in theaters right now, for some reason? So if you want to watch it and you haven't, uh, you can do that on the big screen! Both of these movies have some impressive visuals that we'll get into, as well as the effectiveness of our protagonist's guardians and a certain character's educational pedigree.
